Differential Equation Modelling

A complete reference of the formulas and techniques we use when building differential-equation models for clients.

1. Definition
An equation involving derivatives of a dependent variable with respect to an independent variable.
2. Order & Degree
Order = highest derivative present.
Degree = power of that highest derivative (when polynomial in derivatives).
3. General & Particular Solution
General: contains arbitrary constants. Particular: obtained by assigning specific values.
4. Formation
Eliminate arbitrary constants from a given equation to form the differential equation.
5. Variables Separable
If dydx=f(x)g(y)\frac{dy}{dx}=f(x)g(y) then 1g(y)dy=f(x)dx\frac{1}{g(y)}dy=f(x)dx, and integrate both sides.
6. Homogeneous DE
If dydx=F(y/x)\frac{dy}{dx}=F(y/x), put y=vxy=vx so dydx=v+xdvdx\frac{dy}{dx}=v+x\frac{dv}{dx}.
7. Linear DE
Standard form dydx+Py=Q\frac{dy}{dx}+Py=Q, IF =e∫P dx=e^{\int P\,dx}, solution y⋅IF=∫Q⋅IF dx+Cy\cdot IF=\int Q\cdot IF\,dx+C.
8. Bernoulli's DE
dydx+Py=Qyn\frac{dy}{dx}+Py=Qy^n. Divide by yny^n and convert to linear form.
9. Exact DE
Given M dx+N dy=0M\,dx+N\,dy=0, exact if ∂M/∂y=∂N/∂x\partial M/\partial y=\partial N/\partial x.
10. Orthogonal Trajectories
Slope of curve = dy/dxdy/dx; slope of orthogonal trajectory = −1/(dy/dx)-1/(dy/dx).
11. Standard Integrals
∫dx=x+C\int dx=x+C · ∫xndx=xn+1n+1+C\int x^n dx=\frac{x^{n+1}}{n+1}+C · ∫exdx=ex+C\int e^x dx=e^x+C · ∫1xdx=ln⁡∣x∣+C\int \frac{1}{x}dx=\ln|x|+C.
12. Key Points
Every DE has infinitely many solutions; initial conditions give the particular solution; the integration constant is compulsory.
